1980 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 “Iron Pig”

Project AG

Project AG, AG being the sequence Alphabet assigned to this project.

We affectionately call her Agatha or Agartha. Agatha means “good”, and well, this FJ55 is a good thing, no less. Agartha is a legendary Kingdom that is said to be located in the Earth’s core. This is so apt as when we collected her, Agatha has holes on her floor pan, and we literally can see the “earth move under our feet”.

History of the FJ55, the FJ55 series came after the Land Cruiser 40 Series (FJ40, BJ40) and is arguably the first real station wagon that incorporates comfort and is targeted as a utilitarian family vehicle.

Being only available in petrol version, originally with the F engine, later on replaced by the 2F engine and there were final ones with a 3F engine, they are extremely unpopular as a trip across the land means you would need to carry 3 or 4 jerry cans of petrol even for very short trips. It does not help when these are absolute rust buckets, so they just rot into thin air.

Not a lot of them are left and FJ55s are now very rare. We chanced upon Agatha at a junction and she had a swapped B engine in her. That could be 1 reason why she was still a daily driver. The body work needs a lot of work, but most of the things are still here. As such, she has been adopted into the 517 family. Stay in touch with us as we put her on a path of full restoration back to her former glory.

If you like to be part of the story, drop us a note and 5tay 1n 7ouch.
